Two African Under-17 titles
The Gambia won the African Under-17 championship in 2005 and again in 2009. CAF’s competition history identifies the 2005 success as a home victory, while the 2009 tournament was hosted by Algeria. These are age-group continental titles and should be described that way, rather than confused with the senior Africa Cup of Nations.
In 2005, The Gambia beat Ghana 1–0 in the final. In 2009, it beat Algeria 3–1. CAF records that the 2009 side won all five of its matches, scored 12 goals and conceded only one. The achievement belongs to a particular team and tournament; it does not guarantee the same outcome for every later generation.
Under-20 achievements
The Young Scorpions reached the final of the 2023 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations after beating Nigeria 1–0 in their semi-final. Adama Bojang scored the early goal that settled the match. The final appearance added another major chapter to the country’s youth football history.
At the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Argentina later that year, The Gambia finished top of Group F. FIFA’s preview records victories over Honduras and France, both by 2–1. The team then lost 1–0 to Uruguay in the round of 16. These records show why age-group football deserves a place in the national story in its own right.
What a development pathway means
A pathway is the sequence of opportunities that helps someone improve: enjoyable first sessions, regular practice, age-appropriate competition and access to increasingly demanding coaching. It also includes the ability to continue learning when selection does not go as hoped.
Winning a youth tournament and developing a player are related, but they are different measures. A club can ask whether a young person is improving decision-making, teamwork and confidence, alongside technical skills. Parents and teachers can ask whether training schedules leave room for education and rest. These are practical questions to put to any programme.
Questions to ask before joining an academy
Ask who coaches the sessions, how qualifications can be checked, what the fees cover and how concerns are reported. Obtain clear information about travel arrangements and permissions. A trial should have an identifiable organiser and a stated purpose; promises of an overseas contract deserve careful checking.
Look for a culture in which girls and boys can learn without humiliation, discrimination or pressure to conceal concerns. Keep public stories about young players focused on team achievements and learning. Avoid publishing private school, home or contact details.
A school activity
Create a chart distinguishing Under-17, Under-20 and senior competitions. Add the two Under-17 titles and the 2023 Under-20 achievements. Explain why a footballer’s progress may continue even when a team is eliminated from a tournament.
