A schoolboys’ beginning

Real de Banjul’s own history places its foundation in the 1966/67 season, following a schoolboys’ football trip to Thiès in Senegal. It describes an initial name, Benson and Hedges FC, followed by Real de Bathurst. The account places school football at the centre of the club’s early story.

Names and early achievement

The club dates its use of Real de Banjul to 1970 and its first league title to 1971/72. These are dates in the club’s history; a club name change should not be used by itself to date the renaming of a city. The account also describes involvement in basketball, volleyball and athletics.

Read a club history with care

A club archive tells us what an institution chooses to remember. It can preserve names, journeys and achievements that a league table misses. Compare it with dated federation records and contemporary reporting when investigating a particular season. A cumulative trophy total needs a defined competition and a reference date.

For a school or supporters’ project, build a short season record: competition, year, opponent, result and source. Keep a supporter’s memory alongside that record, labelled as a recollection. Do not treat an old squad list or office-holder as current information.

A question for supporters

What would you preserve from a season without a trophy: a community contribution, a memorable match or a player’s development? Explain why your choice belongs in the club’s history and what evidence could support it.
