Two Commonwealth podiums
The Gambia National Olympic Committee records Faye Njie’s silver medal at Birmingham 2022 and bronze at Glasgow 2026. Its 1 August 2026 account identifies him as the first Gambian athlete to win more than one Commonwealth Games medal. The two podiums, four years apart, connect two chapters of Gambian representation at the Games.
The sport and the competition
The International Judo Federation lists Njie as a Gambian judoka in the under-73kg category. The weight category identifies the competition class used in the results.
Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games are separate competitions. A medal from one must not be presented as a medal from the other. Keep the edition, category and result together when writing a short athlete profile, and open the organiser’s record if you need the sequence of individual contests.
Look beyond a medal table
The medal story also invites a wider question about opportunity. Schools and clubs can ask how young people encounter a sport, find coaching and sustain their interest over time.
For a club discussion, compare how football and judo report results. A football score and a judo contest outcome use different systems. Start with the competition’s own explanation rather than assuming that familiar football terms will describe another sport accurately.
A useful display activity
Create two labelled cards: “Birmingham 2022 — silver” and “Glasgow 2026 — bronze”. Add the GNOC source and ask what further context would help a reader understand the achievement. Explain how the two cards describe separate achievements and why both belong in the story.
