A Gambian player remembered abroad

Biri Biri, Alhaji Momodo Njie, remains an important name in Gambian football history. Sevilla FC’s tribute records his arrival from Denmark in 1973 and his departure in 1978. The club remembers both his sporting contribution and the lasting connection he made with supporters.

Put the figures in context

Sevilla credits him with 109 official appearances and 34 goals for the club. It highlights his 14 goals in the 1974/75 promotion season and records the club’s presentation of a gold insignia to him in 2017. These are Sevilla career figures, not totals for every team or the national side.

The club published its tribute on 19 July 2020 following his death. A commemorative account is a valuable source for an institution’s memory, while a match-by-match investigation may need competition records and contemporary reports as well.

More than a number

Statistics can identify a contribution, but they cannot explain every supporter’s attachment to a player. In a discussion, separate a measurable statement from an interpretation. “He scored a stated number of goals” and “he changed how a supporter felt about the club” need different kinds of evidence.

A respectful profile should leave room for the player’s Gambian context and the people who knew his work. Ask what a local archive could preserve: a dated photograph, a programme, an interview or a carefully sourced account of a match. Credit the contributor and avoid turning recollection into an unsupported certainty.
